Soviet Union with a NATO nickname Fishbed. No other jet has had as many planes
produced as the Mig-21. Depending on the reference source 8,000 - 13,000 planes of
all versions were made in the Soviet Union, under license to allied countries and China
without license. A small, fast, agile, dependable and most importantly simple making it
easy to turn out great numbers of the plane.
A total of 26 MiG-21BIS were received by the Suomen Ilmavoimien (Finnish Air Force)
with most going to the HavLLv 31 (Fighter Squadron 31). On September 21, 1978 the
first two aircraft to arrive were MG-111 and MG-114 with MG-129 arriving on July 17,
1980. Between 1987 and 1989 MG-129 and two other aircraft were modified to RECCE
standards. On February 9, 1998 MG-129 made its last active duty flight accumulating
1,571 hours and 20 minutes flight time before becoming an operating teaching aid at
Kuopio Airport’s mechanic school.
